Longs Peak and Climbing Toward Leadership

The pinnacle of the trip, both literally and figuratively, was Day 4’s summit attempt of Longs Peak, one of Colorado’s most formidable 14,000-foot mountains. This challenge was more than just a hike—it was a mental and physical battle against exhaustion, extreme altitude, and harsh weather conditions.

For the past eight weeks, ten dedicated JROTC high school students have been rigorously preparing for an adventure of a lifetime: the 2024 Colorado Britt Adventure Trip. This isn’t just a getaway—it’s a transformative journey designed to test resilience, foster leadership, and build lifelong skills in the majestic wilderness of Estes Park, Colorado.

Pre-Trip Training: Strengthening Minds and Bodies

Preparation for this trip wasn’t just about packing bags and lacing up boots. It involved weeks of physical conditioning, mental preparation, and leadership training. Students pushed their limits through endurance workouts, skill-based learning, and team-building exercises designed to prepare them for the extreme conditions they would face in the mountains.

Skill-Building Before the Big Ascent

The first three days of the trip focused on essential skill-building evolutions, ensuring the students were ready for their biggest challenge: summiting Longs Peak. They trained in:

  • Gear familiarization – Learning how to use and trust their equipment.
  • Rock climbing fundamentals – Practicing both indoor and outdoor climbing techniques.
  • Elevation acclimation – Adapting to the high-altitude environment to mitigate altitude sickness.
